Vaynerchuk Influences Students Today

By Marie Cervantes

Gary Vaynerchuk, author of “Crush It!” gave a presentation entitled "Making A Name For Yourself With Social Media" Wednesday at the Alkek Teaching Theater during Mass Communication Week.

Aside from helping his family’s wine business become a success, Vaynerchuk was voted No. 1 blogger of the year and No. 18 on Askmen.com’s Top 49 Most Influential Men of 2009. He has made television appearances on "Nightline", "ABC News", "Conan O’Brien" and many others.

Vaynerchuk expressed how passionate he is about his work. He gave a lot of input to people about outreach to media by using websites such as Facebook and Twitter.

When asked what his mix of media strategy consisted of, he replied, “It’s all about listening. It’s all about engaging with the audience and making their topic your point of interest.”
Chase Pritchett, a 21-year-old studying Journalism, was one of the students who had a lot to say about this seminar and Vaynerchuk’s perspective.

“Gary Vaynerchuk came across as very confident in what he does and how he thinks, but he still maintains a level of humility. He doesn’t hesitate to tell you that he doesn’t know everything and he still has room to grow.”

Julie Franklin, a 19-year-old studying Public Relations, didn’t get the same things out of the seminar as Pritchett.

“I didn’t agree with some of the things Gary Vaynerchuk said about outreach to the public, but I haven’t been doing a good job at reaching a broad fan base,” Franklin said. “Maybe I should rethink how I’m approaching public relations. This Gary Vaynerchuk might be on to something after all.”
